" The best terroirs on Lake Biel are on the steep, southeastern slopes of the Jura where the soils are poor and very calcareous. Cultivated bythe Krebs family for Gromann wines in Zurich, the 2018 Bieler See PinotNoir Vieilles Vignes comes from 40+-year-old vines in the heart of theVogelsang cru in Wingreis near Twann. Aged in new French barriques andbottled unfiltered, the dark ruby-garnet colored wine offers a deep, intense and complex bouquet of ripe and intense cherries and darkberries intertwined with refreshing chalky and initially quite prominenttoasty notes that integrate with sufficient aeration (15 hours isn't toomuch in this case). Silky, refreshing and very elegant on the palate, this is a full-bodied, intense and lush, firmly structured and finessed,chalky-driven Pinot with a long, well-organized and stringent finishthat reveals refreshing red berry aromas and chalky precision thatrepresents a really excellent, still widely unknown terroir forBurgundy-styled wines. This is a promising 2018 Pinot Noir, and itssaline and fresh finish is truly stimulating, even though there is a bitof oaky astringency on the bitter-sweet and perhaps somewhat harshfinish. However, this is definitely a wine worth looking for, stored andopened from time to time. 13.4% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted inZurich in February 2022."
